Portland's Underground
Ever hear about construction equipment falling through sink holes around Portland? They’re not sink holes, they’re the Portland Underground, also called the Shanghai Tunnels. Long ago basements all over Portland were connected through a vast network of tunnels. Allowing merchants to bring goods from the docks into the city, avoiding muddy unpaved streets. Of course, where people go, crime goes.
Kidnapping, opium dens, brothels, boot-legging, it was everywhere. As roads were paved it was used less but the crime remained, Shanghais continued until World War 2 began. These days it is all but gone, between earthquake proofing, businesses closing it for security reasons, and people simply not knowing it’s there, it is slowly being destroyed.
For a long time I’ve wanted to go see it, there are tours. Finally this last weekend I went with 9 friends, the tour was almost 40 people total. Being close to Halloween, the tour-guide told us about all of the ghosts and paranormal activity. For someone who grew up around Portland it was well worth my $17, but the normal tours cost less. Check out www.shanghaitunnels.info if you want to see more about it.

“After nine months, “Steeped,” the first Portland-made narrative film produced by wideshot studios, is making it’s long-awaited debut. Produced by Diana Bayless and directed by Peter Hermes, “Steeped” is a short film focusing on the routines of the modern relationship. Stuck in the hum drum of their daily existence, Jake and Dana both need something to spice up their lives and each find refuge in unexpected ways. It will be screening alongside other films and music videos made by the wideshot team.”

Since 1996 and the release of their debut album ‘Apocalyptica Plays Metallica By Four Cellos’, Apocalyptica - graduates of the prestigious Sibelius Academy in Finland - have been developing a style that is tough to put a name to… ‘Heavy Cello Mayhem’? ‘Rock’n’ Resin’?!… The possibilities are vast, but whatever the latest tag, the fact remains that never before had a group of classically-trained cellists, metal fans to a man, attempted to fuse together the seemingly disparate worlds of classical music & hard rock…of Prokofiev & Pantera… Shostakovich & Slayer… to seek out the middle ground between the mosh pit & the orchestra pit, the dinner jacket & the denim jacket, whilst being 100 per cent respectful to both camps.

These are super informal meetups where we hang out, talk about geeky stuff (wikis, open source, new technologies, openid, …), and wind down with like-minded people over beverages.
Since this is the last meetup of the year (it doesn’t make sense to have a 4th Thursday meetup in Nov/Dev to conflict with the holidays), we wanted to do something a little different …
Thanks to a sponsor who wishes to remain anonymous we will be having the meetup at Jace Gace. Our sponsor will cover the fee to rent the space for the evening, but you will be on your own to pay for drinks / waffles. Have you ever been to Jace Gace? They have the most amazing waffles and they have beer / wine! Mmmm, waffles and alcohol. Heaven.

The MAiZE “Twists and Turns” into Ten Years in Bridgetown.
What began back in 1999 as a great and “weird” Portland idea has grown into a Portland tradition. The MAiZE, a giant puzzle carved into a towering cornfield, has become a classic fall event for tens of thousands of visitors craving adventure and laughter and to connect with life on a family farm.
Portlander Craig Easterly, creator of the annual giant-sized maze at The Pumpkin Patch, created a design this year that celebrates Portland and its beautiful cityscape and surroundings. The “Bridgetown MAiZE” at The Pumpkin Patch features the city’s bridges, rivers, mountains and outdoor spirit. Easterly promises that crossing the newly built Sauvie Island Bridge, and finding The Pumpkin Patch, is the easy part. Finding your way out of the 5-acre labyrinth will be both a physical and mental challenge for kids of all ages to enjoy.
